CommunicationImportance of Open Communication With KidsTalk, talk, talkBefore making any decisions, it’s important for parents and teens to communicate. Both sides need to understand why the teen feels there’s a need for the technology he or she is asking for. If you’re convinced, the next step is to set a budget not only for the initial purchase but also for the ongoing service plan. Teens often see advertisements for free cell phones or internet connection, but don’t realize that along with the new toy comes a monthly service plan plus fees for overages and taxes. From there, it’s time to do your research. Any teen in school knows what’s best when it comes to choosing electronic devices. But it’s usually the parents who know how much they can afford. Research takes time but it’s the only way to make sure your teen gets the features and service he truly needs right from the beginning. Modifying service agreements usually comes at a hefty price. If you’re fairly illiterate when it comes to technology, then learn. Believe it or not, there is a wealth of useful information available on the web. You can probably learn a lot from your teens, too. And never be afraid to seek the advice of other parents. Parents who have “been there, done that” know things that you don’t know. Just whatever you do, don’t rely on the salesperson to provide your knowledge, especially if he works on commission. With the budget in place and the service contracts signed, there’s still more to do. Now it’s time to put together usage rules and outline disciplinary measures for violating those rules. Both you and your teen need to know what will happen that first time the monthly cell phone bill is several hundred dollars more than you expected. If you don’t go online and monitor usage throughout the month, it’s not a matter of IF this will happen, but when. The bottom lineWhen it comes to teens and electronic devices, the bottom line is this: It’s up to you to make sure your teens (and pre-teens) use the technology responsibly and safely. If you’re technologically-challenged then learn! Besides being better informed, the knowledge will enhance your life and perhaps, save your teen’s.
