Parent of a 14 year old F, interested in a 23 year old M

:: October 06, 2007 08:36

I am wondering what my rights are regarding my childs developing friendship with a 23 year old male counselor from summer camp. There are daily emails, phone calls, and letters. What can I tell her as far as what could happen if they were to take this "friendship" to a relationship that involved as little as kissing? I don't want it to get even that far, so I want some concrete data on our laws. It seems that Iowa is very low in the age of consent and I was surprised by that. Can you tell me more.

The age of consent in IOWA is 16; however, if a 23 year old is showing "interest" of a sexual nature in a 14 year old, especially when he was someone in a position of authority over her at a camp, he may be in violation of a few laws and could get into very serious criminal legal trouble if anything has occurred between them. As the parent of a 14 year old, you have the legal authority, the right, and the responsibility to tell the 23 year old to stop contacting your daughter or face possible criminal actions. If he continues, contact your local authorities and report him to police. He may also be in violation of internet communication laws with minors especially due to the fact that he knows your daughters true age. Click here to review the IOWA Sexual Abuse laws

sex between a 14 and a 17 year old/with parental permission

:: July 25, 2007 01:45

i know a 17 year old in a relationship with a 14 year old who has permission from her parents to be in such a relationship, the relationship is sexual in nature. is this permitted by law or is this trouble?

This could be trouble. Parental consent does not over-ride state law. 16 is the legal age at which a minor may consent to sexual contact. If a 17 year old is engaged in sexual contact with a 14 year old, this is a violation of state law. If reported, there is a possibility the 17 year old could be charged as an adult.

first off i would like to know what the legal age of consent is and if there is any certin amounts of years apart that it would matter say im 26 and i was maybe looking towards 17 year old and i was just wondering if that would be illegal or if i could get in to any kind of trouble for doing something like that? thanks for your time

The age of consent to have sexual intercourse in Iowa is 16. This means that you would not be found in violation of the current sexual offense laws as long as the sex was consensual and you are "not" in a position of authority over the minor, an employer, a teacher, counselor, therapist, employed, volunteer, or contracted by the department of corrections, or a person of influence within the dep. The age of consent is 18 under these circumstances. A 17 year old is a minor under the legal control and care of the parents. The parents have certain legal rights and responsibilies regarding the protection and welfare of their child. They are within their authority to handle any legal matters on the minor's behalf or in protection of the minor welfare.

I feel bad about this but want to know the laws ahead of time just to be on the safe side in case anything would unexpectedly happen. There's a girl who I think is only 16 that hangs out with the adult crowd a lot and who is pursuing me. I'm 25. She comes over to my place and I let her hang out for awhile. Nothing ever happens. I don't want to do anything with her if it can get me in trouble but am fearful she will try something and I will get caught up and do something stupid. What are the laws and limits in this situation? Should I not let her come over anymore?
