The teen years are arguably the most defining years of your life. One big screw up can literally alter the course of your life and it seems to be more pronounced in the teen years. Most of us live to tell about it and even laugh about it later on in life, but WO, when you are smack in the middle of your teens years, it is tough!

Taking the “mature adult” path is not easy for someone 16 years of age, or even for someone 19 years of age. (Teens will probably argue with me on this point and I will listen).

With the exception of teens like Jamie who are exposed and introduced to their likely career paths and actually begin earning an income at such a young age, that they have a team of financial advisor and attorney's before they even hit their teens, the average life experiences of a 16 year old consist of high school, team sports, home life, maybe part-time minimum wage job experience and/or vacation travel, church camp etc... The fact is most 16 year olds have no idea what it takes to live on their own and meet their own needs. Why would they? They’re 16! They don’t have the benefit of a full education yet and don’t have experience in the job market. They haven’t yet had to meet their own needs emotionally, financially, or physically, so how could we convince ourselves or even anticipate that a 16 year old might have the emotional capacity or experience necessary to meet the needs of a dependent child? We shouldn't.

Jamie has more resources available to her than the average teen but I guarantee, this won’t be easy for her. Parenthood is simply the toughest responsibility in life. That's not to say it's not a blessing with huge rewards, it's just that it requires much sacrifice, patience and committment. I don’t know too many 16 year olds who have a firm grip on those attributes, do you?. I certainly didn’t when I was 16.

Jamie is somewhat uncommon as 16 year olds go, in that, she was handling a full blown acting career, high school, media coverage, boyfriend relationship, interviews, family relationships, agents, accountants, financial planning etc… These are not common activities for the average 16 year old; however, Jamie has proven that even she is not immune to the biggest of teen BLUNDERS!

In regards to Ms. Spears article: Why is it that her boyfriend is the only one being held criminally liable? How does anyone know who pursued who?
It seems that she has had more life experiences than her age 16 years, yet the laws only consider her year of birth and not anything else.
It seems that these type of laws are only made to preserve the female's reputation and disregard the male persona.
What laws are out there protecting our young men from these laws?
